To begin with, let us take a general over view of the resume.
What is a Resume?
A resume is simply a summary of your work history, experience or professional qualifications.
It is more than just a summary, however. The perfect resume is one that sales your skills and abilities.
In some other parts of the world, a resume is also known as curriculum vitae.
Parts of a Resume
A typical resume has got the following parts:
- Contact details: Usually appears at the top of your resume. They include the street address, your telephone number and/email address.
- Objective: This is where you tell your prospective employer what your goals are or what you hope to accomplish when you get the job.
- Summary or profile: this section consists of a list of your strongest areas, achievements or abilities.
- Experience : Here is where you list your work experience by institution and year.
- Accomplishents and skills: Special skills or accomplishments that are relevant to the career you are pursuing and deserve special mention go here.
- Education: Here you list the educational institutions you attended, the year you attended it and the qualification you obtained.
- Reference: You list individuals who know you and can back you up, including their contact details.
Types of Resumes
Resumes consist of three types. These are:
- Chronological Resume: This is the usual way of writing a resume, with the focus being on your work experience. This experience is listed chronologically, with the most recent going first.
- Functional Resume: This type of resume writing focuses on your accomplishments and skills and how you can use these for the benefit of your prospective employer. In other words, it is more concerned with selling your skills and abilities.
- Combination: implements characteristics of both a functional and chronological resume.
